A spirited performance from Newcastle United powered the Toon Army to a well-deserved victory over Manchester United at St James’ Park on Wednesday night.
Twenty-two year-old William Osula came off the bench to give Newcastle United the win in the 90th minute with a sublime left-footed strike.
The home side dominated the tie until Jacobs Ramsey picked up a second yellow card for simulation just before halftime.
However, Anthony Gordon won and converted a penalty to give Newcastle United the lead moments after Ramsey left the pitch.
The lead only lasted a few minutes as Casemiro made up for his mistake leading to Gordon’s penalty with the equaliser for Manchester United.
Despite playing with 10-men, the hosts looked the better side in the second half as Michael Carrick’s men looked out of sorts.
However, the introduction of Joshua Zirkzee and Amad Diallo for Bryan Mbuemo and Kobbie Mainoo added impetus to United’s attack.
Aaron Ramsdale made two brilliant saves from Leny Yoro’s header and a long effort from Joshua Zirkzee to keep the Magpies in the tie.
Kieran Trippier took advantage of a loose ball and placed a pass to William Osula who carried on with the ball with a solo run before unleashing a curler into the far corner.
Despite the loss, Manchester United remain in third with 51 points same as Aston Villa who suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Chelsea at Villa Park.
