Shocker! Grimsby Town knock out Manchester United after penalty kicks thriller

Grimsby Town are through to the next round of the Carabao Cup after a thrilling penalty shootout against Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United.

The fourth tier team of English football upset the Red Devils in what would be a memorable night in the history of club for many years to come.

Ruben Amorimade a few changes to the team that drew at Fulham on Sunday with Benjamin Sesko getting his first start.

However, the Red Devils look out of sort with tlloads of misplaced passes and disjointed patterns of play.

David Artell’s men showed bravery and resilence from the blast of the first whistle as they raced to a two-nil lead within the half hour mark.

Charles Vernam powered a low drive into the bottom left corner of goal to give the Mariners the lead.

Tyrell Warren doubled the lead on the half hour mark as he capitalised on Andre Onana’s mistake to send the home supporters into a start of frenzy.

Christy Pym had quite a busy first half as he made a couple of saves to deny Benjamin Sesko from getting his first Manchester United goal.

The Mariners went into the break with a quite comfortable lead as the Red Devils struggled to find their rhythm.

Ruben Amorim’s introduction of captain, Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount and Bryan Mbeumo helped the Red Devils with more threat at goal and it soon made off.

Bryan Mbeumo got his first Manchester goal with fifteen minutes left on the clock from a sharp curler while Harry Maguire met Mason Mount brilliant corner with near post header to restore parity late in the tie.

After a thrilling penalty shootout, Grimsby Town secured a 12-11 win to add more misery to Manchester United poor start to the season.

Fans stormed the mainbowl of the stadium in celebration of the magnificent feat after Bryan Mbeumo’s penalty kick came off the crossbar.

Everton, Fulahm, Brighton progress to second round

Meanwhile, Everton booked spot in the next round of the competition with two-nil home win over Mansfield Town.

Two second half goals from Carlos Alcaraz and Beto secured victory for David Moyes’ side as they are yet to concede at their new home ground after two matches.

Brighton thrashed Oxford City six-nil away from home as under-21 forward Stefanos Tzimas marked his debut with a brace.

A George Tanner own goal and Raul Jimenez’s first goal of the as season secured Marco Silva’s Fulham spot in the next round of the competition.
