Akor Adams scored the only goal on Saturday as Venezia beat Napoli 1-0 at the Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo, ending a run of six straight Serie A defeats and claiming their first win of the season.
Adams broke the deadlock four minutes into the second half. Simon Sohm launched a long ball forward, Amir Rrahmani failed to deal with it, and the Nigeria international muscled past the Napoli defender and fired past Alex Meret. The shot took a deflection on its way in.
The goal was Adams’ second in Serie A. It ended a barren spell since his first league goal against Fiorentina on 11 September, and it handed new coach Davide Nicola a winning start in the Venezia dugout.
Napoli dominated the ball and had 20 attempts on goal, but goalkeeper Filip Stankovic made nine saves to keep them out. His biggest moment came in the 68th minute, when he stopped Kevin De Bruyne’s penalty after Matias Moreno brought down substitute Rasmus Hojlund.
Venezia had lost all six league games before the visit of Napoli, scoring five goals and conceding sixteen. Their first three points of the season still leave them bottom of the table, but only one point separates them from the sides above.
Nevertheless, Venezia’s win keeps them bottom of the Serie A after seven matches while Napoli missed the chance to climb into the top four. They sit ninth on 10 points after their third defeat of the campaign.
