The race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup intensified across Africa today, with a series of crucial qualifying matches producing drama, controversy, and celebration in equal measure.
In Algiers, Algeria booked their place at next year’s World Cup after easing past Somalia 3–0. The Desert Foxes dominated from start to finish, sealing top spot in their group with a clinical performance that confirmed their return to football’s biggest stage.
Elsewhere, Uganda kept their qualification hopes alive with a narrow 1–0 win away to Botswana, while Guinea defeated Mozambique 2–1 in Maputo to strengthen their position in Group G.
In Monrovia, Liberia earned a morale-boosting 3–1 victory over Namibia, moving closer to contention for the runner-up spot.
However, not all the day’s action took place on the pitch. The fixture between Malawi and Equatorial Guinea was cancelled after the visiting team failed to arrive due to reported travel complications. The Confederation of African Football is expected to review the situation and determine whether the match will be rescheduled or awarded.
