Nigeria international Arthur Okonkwo produced a standout performance on his Charlton Athletic debut as the Addicks beat West Ham United 2-1 away in the Championship on Saturday.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper, who joined Charlton on a season-long loan from Wrexham just two days earlier, was thrown straight into the starting lineup and made eight saves to help his new side take all three points at the London Stadium.
Charlton took the lead in the seventh minute through captain Lloyd Jones and doubled their advantage in the 56th minute via Tyreece Campbell. Joel Piroe pulled one back for West Ham in the 74th minute, but Okonkwo’s saves and a late missed penalty from Taty Castellanos secured the victory.
Okonkwo was called into serious action after the break, including a one-handed stop to deny Piroe. Reports from the game credit him with eight saves in total as Charlton maintained their perfect start to the Championship season.
The move to The Valley came after Okonkwo dropped down the pecking order at Wrexham following the arrival of Anthony Patterson from Sunderland. He had been a key figure in Wrexham’s back-to-back promotions, making over 120 appearances and keeping 46 clean sheets.
Charlton manager Nathan Jones had previously praised Okonkwo’s shot-stopping after facing him last season. The keeper, who has two Super Eagles caps, said after signing that he wanted another season to improve and develop.
Okonkwo’s next test comes at home to Preston North End next weekend. For now, the debut has given Charlton a confident start and given Nigeria another strong showing from one of their goalkeepers in the Championship.
