La Liga champions FC Barcelona have confirmed the signing of England winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United in a deal reportedly worth up to €80 million.
Barcelona announced on Friday that Gordon has signed a five-year contract that will keep him at the club until June 30, 2031.
The 25-year-old arrives in Catalonia after an impressive season with Newcastle, where he scored 17 goals across all competitions. Ten of those goals came in the UEFA Champions League, making him the Magpies’ top scorer during the campaign.
Gordon’s arrival is expected to strengthen Barcelona’s attacking options as the club prepares for major changes in the forward line. Veteran Polish striker Robert Lewandowski is set to leave at the expiration of his contract, while Marcus Rashford could also depart following the end of his loan spell from Manchester United.
Barcelona are also reportedly exploring more attacking reinforcements, with Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid linked with a possible move to the club. The Catalan giants are additionally considering another attempt to keep Rashford beyond his current deal.
The Spanish champions are believed to be in a stronger financial position after several seasons of restricted spending. The reopening of the partially rebuilt Camp Nou has also improved the club’s economic outlook under La Liga’s financial fair play regulations.
Several departures could still happen before the transfer window closes, with players such as Roony Bardghji, Ansu Fati and Marc-Andre ter Stegen linked with exits.
For Newcastle, Gordon’s transfer becomes the second biggest sale in the club’s history after Alexander Isak joined Liverpool FC in a £125 million move last summer.
Reports also suggest Newcastle could target Ez Abde of Real Betis as a possible replacement.
Gordon joined Newcastle from Everton FC in 2023 for £45 million, with Everton reportedly entitled to 15 percent of the profit made from his sale.
