Benin boosted their World Cup qualifying hopes with a gritty 1–0 win over Rwanda today in Kigali. The match, played at the Amahoro Stadium, was tight from start to finish, with both sides struggling to create clear chances in the opening half.
The breakthrough came late in the second half when Tosin Aiyegun struck decisively for Benin. The forward pounced after a swift counterattack, slotting past the Rwandan goalkeeper to give the visitors the lead. Rwanda pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but Benin’s defence stayed composed and managed the game well.
The victory puts Benin at the top of Group C with 17 points, keeping them ahead of South Africa, who were held to a goalless draw by Zimbabwe. Nigeria remain in contention after beating Lesotho, but the pressure is now on them as Benin head into their final group match with momentum and control.
Benin will face Nigeria in their last qualifier, a clash that could determine who secures a direct ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Rwanda, already out of the running, were competitive but lacked the cutting edge needed to trouble the group leaders.
Aiyegun’s goal and a disciplined defensive display have now moved Benin to the brink of a historic qualification.
