Manchester United have reached a full agreement to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa after triggering a release clause in the Belgian midfielder’s contract. The fee is worth around £35-36m, activated through a mechanism that left Villa with little room to negotiate despite their desire to keep him.
Villa had no intention of selling Tielemans and had even offered him a new deal in recent months. The release clause in his contract, however, gave United the power to force the move once they decided to activate it, overriding Villa’s wishes entirely.
Tielemans had also made his own preference clear, turning down interest from other clubs in favor of Old Trafford. His desire to work under Michael Carrick reportedly played a part in smoothing the deal along once United made their move.
The transfer accelerated quickly after Belgium’s exit from the World Cup, with United moving fast once the clause was triggered. A medical was scheduled to follow shortly after, with United working to finalize personal terms before an official club announcement.
Tielemans arrives as United’s second midfield addition of the summer, following a £50m deal already agreed for Chelsea’s Andrey Santos. Together, the pair are expected to reshape the engine room of Carrick’s side ahead of the new season.
The signing comes after United’s pursuit of Atalanta’s Ederson collapsed at the medical stage, forcing the club to redirect their midfield rebuild toward the experienced Belgian instead.
The 29-year-old joined Villa on a free transfer from Leicester City in 2023 and made himself a key figure under Unai Emery. He captained Belgium at the World Cup and was central to Villa’s Europa League triumph last season, scoring in the final against Freiburg. He previously scored the winning goal in Leicester’s 2021 FA Cup final victory.
Tielemans brings vision, passing range, and leadership to a United midfield desperate for both control and experience. With over 90 caps for Belgium and a proven record of delivering in big moments, he represents a low-risk, ready-made option for a club still building under Carrick.
