CAF announce increase in prize money for Champions League, Confederation Cup

Dr. Patrice Motsepe, the President of the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), has announced a $2 million increase in prize money for the winner of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and the Confederation Cup as the football body continues to make the competition more lucrative.

The winner of the 2025/26 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League will receive $6 million, which is a 50% increase, while the winner of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup will get $4 million, marking a 100% increase.

CAF announced the development in a statement published on its website on Monday.

Over the five years of Dr. Motsepe’s leadership at CAF, the prize money for the Champions League winner has grown from $2.5 million to $6 million—a 140% rise. Within the given time frame, the Confederation Cup winner’s prize has also seen a significant increase from $1.25 million to $4 million, a 220% increase.

These latest boosts raise the total prize money and solidarity payments for African clubs to over $42 million per season. This represents a 114% increase since Dr. Motsepe became CAF President. For comparison, CAF paid out just $18.8 million in total club prize money back in 2021.

Dr. Motsepe has always strived to improve the financial standing of clubs participating in the two competitions. In August 2024, Dr. Motsepe kept his promise to strengthen club competitions and give more financial help to teams.

He announced that clubs eliminated in the preliminary stages of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup would each receive $50,000. A year later, in 2025, CAF doubled this support to $100,000. This change led to a record 130 clubs from across Africa joining the 2025/26 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup season.
