Chelsea hit with 74 charges over FA rule breaches

Premier League giants Chelsea have been hit with 74 alleged rule breaches by the Football Association, primarily concerning payments to agents between 2009 and 2022.

The charges focus on transfers that occurred during the 2010-11 and 2015-16 seasons when the club was under the ownership of Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.

Three specific deals under investigation involve players Eden Hazard, Samuel Eto’o, and Willian, though there is no suggestion of wrongdoing on the part of the players themselves.

The alleged breaches relate to agents, intermediaries, and third-party investments in players.

Chelsea, now led by American investor Todd Boehly, stated that they were the ones who self-reported the potential breaches to the FA. The club has until September 19 to respond to the charges.

While potential sanctions could include a fine, a transfer embargo, or even a points deduction, Chelsea’s high level of cooperation will likely be a mitigating factor. The club does not expect to face a sporting sanction.
