Super Eagles midfielder Christantus Uche has been ruled out for the entire 2026/27 La Liga season after suffering a serious knee injury in a pre-season friendly.
The 23-year-old was stretchered off during Getafe’s clash with AS Monaco on Thursday, following a reckless challenge from Monaco defender Christian Mawissa, who was shown a straight red card for the tackle.
Getafe initially described the injury as a contusion to the kneecap, but further examinations painted a far more worrying picture. An MRI scan showed multiple tears to the ligaments and meniscus in his right knee.
Uche will now undergo surgery in the coming days before beginning a lengthy rehabilitation programme, effectively ending his season before it had even begun.
The injury comes at a crucial time for the Nigerian, who had just returned to Getafe following a difficult loan spell at Crystal Palace where he made 14 Premier League appearances without a start. He had been tipped for a regular role under head coach Jose Bordalas this season.
Uche’s best campaign in Spain came in 2024/25, when he contributed four goals and six assists across 33 La Liga appearances as a versatile forward and attacking midfielder.
