Classic Klassiker lives up to billing as Bayern, Dortmund settle for draw

The 112th edition of the Klassiker had no winner or loser as Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund shared the spoils.

Incidentally, both teams came into the match after disappointments in the 1st leg of their UEFA Champions League fixtures in midweek.

While Bayern Munich lost at home to Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund suffered a humiliating defeat away at Barcelona.

Bayern Munich dominated the first half as Harry Kane and Michael Olise forced saves off Gregor Kobel.

Gregor Kobel had quite a busy half unlike the rest of his teammates as he pulled off another sublime save to deny Harry Kane from scoring late in the first half.

The first half ended with Bayern Munich being the better side as the visitors struggled to compete the league leaders.

However, Borussia Dortmund took the lead shortly after the restart as Maximilian Beier met Ryerson’s cross with a header into the bottom corner.

Beier missed the chance to double the visitors lead shortly after, as he failed to hit the target.

Bayern Munich left back Raphael Guerreiro latched on to Thonas Muller’s pass and scored from close range to give the home side the equalizer.

Gregor Kobel was left helpless four minutes later as former Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry scored from the penalty area to give Bayern Munich the lead.

Unfortunately, the home side couldn’t hold onto their lead for long. Anton Walderman equalized for Dortmund from a rebound with 15 minutes to the end of regular time.

Borussia Dortmund could have stole a late winner but Pascal Gross missed a golden opportunity as he rifled the ball over the bar from the penalty area.

Nevertheless, Bayern Munich remain top of the Bundesliga and are six points clear as Union Berlin held defending champions Bayer Leverkusen – 63 points, to a stalemate at the Bay Arena.
