Argentina reached the World Cup final after beating England 2-1 in extra time at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday. Anthony Gordon put the Three Lions ahead in the 55th minute, finishing a Morgan Rogers cross.
England held the lead for over half an hour, edging closer to a first final since 1966. But Argentina struck twice late on to turn the game around.
Enzo Fernandez equalized in the 85th minute. Lautaro Martinez then headed home the winner in the 92nd minute. Lionel Messi assisted both goals.
Djed Spence made a crucial tackle late on to deny Giuliano Simeone a clear chance, but England could not hold on. Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, England’s main goal scorers all tournament, found no way through in the closing stages.
Argentina’s run to the final has been bumpy. They needed extra time to beat Cape Verde in the round of 32 and were tested again by Egypt in the round of 16.
Messi will now face Spain in Sunday’s final at MetLife Stadium. Argentina are chasing back-to-back titles, a feat last achieved roughly 70 years ago. Spain reached the final by beating France 2-0.
England’s wait for a first final since 1966 continues, adding fresh pain to a rivalry already shaped by moments like the Hand of God and the 1998 shootout.
