Nigeria’s Falconets were held to a goalless draw by China PR on Thursday, leaving their hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup to be decided in their final Group F match.
The 0-0 draw at Arena Sosnowiec gave Moses Aduku’s side their first point of the tournament following their opening-day defeat to Spain.
China created more opportunities during the contest, registering 15 attempts compared with Nigeria’s 10. However, only three of China’s efforts were on target, while the Falconets managed two shots on target.
Despite increased pressure from China, particularly after the break, Nigeria remained organised defensively and kept their opponents scoreless throughout the 90 minutes plus stoppage time.
The Falconets also showed attacking intent, winning seven corners to China’s two, although they were unable to convert their pressure into a goal.
One of the positives for Nigeria was the debut of Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei, who joined the squad in Poland after missing the opening match against Spain.
The forward immediately provided an attacking outlet, recording five attempts — the most by any Nigerian player in the match. She had efforts in the 17th, 32nd, 38th, 45th and 72nd minutes as she looked to test the Chinese defence.
China entered the match on the back of a 5-0 victory over New Caledonia, making Nigeria’s clean sheet a significant defensive result.
The Falconets will now turn their attention to their final Group F fixture against New Caledonia on Sunday. A victory would give Nigeria their best chance of securing progression to the Round of 16.
