Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has congratulated the national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament.
The team defeated Mali 78–64 in the final played in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, clinching their fifth consecutive title and extending a remarkable ten-year unbeaten run in the competition.
In a statement released shortly after the triumph, Mrs. Tinubu described the win as a proud moment for the country, praising the players for their resilience, teamwork, and commitment to excellence.

She acknowledged the significance of the achievement, noting that the team had brought home Nigeria’s second major sports trophy in just two weeks, a development she attributed to divine grace and national spirit.
“To God be the glory for yet another victory for Nigeria,” she said. “You have shown once again that with discipline, dedication, and unity of purpose, Nigerians can dominate on any stage. You are true inspirations and a source of pride to girls and women everywhere.”
The First Lady also commended the players and coaching staff for representing the country with dignity and passion. She offered prayers for their continued success and looked forward to welcoming the team back home with the trophy.
D’Tigress’ victory was also celebrated by sports fans and officials nationwide, with many highlighting the leadership of head coach Rena Wakama, who made history as the first female coach to lead Nigeria to an AfroBasket title.
