Nigeria’s Flamingos began their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland after conceding twice before Oluebube Umejiaku pulled a goal back in the second half.
Wiktoria Skrzypczak opened the scoring for Poland in the 33rd minute from the penalty spot before Natalia Skrok doubled the European side’s advantage in the 65th minute.
Nigeria responded through Umejiaku, who found the net in the 79th minute to reduce the deficit and give the Flamingos hope of a comeback.
However, Poland held on in the closing stages to secure the victory and leave Nigeria without a point from their opening fixture.
The Flamingos will now look to regroup and improve their performance in their next match as they seek to get their campaign back on track.
