Frenkie de Jong opens up on potential Barcelona exit

Frenkie de Jong arrived at Barcelona with a growing reputation as one of the world’s best midfielders but the 27-year-old has failed to live up to the potential he showed at Ajax.

Injuries and poor form have seen him lose his place to young Spaniard Casado, and the rumour mill has been spinning regarding a potential exit.

His contract with the Spanish La Liga giants expires in the summer of 2026, and he is yet to sign a new deal. The Dutchman had previously turned down a move to Manchester United, despite Barcelona’s attempts to force him out.

Speaking to Voetbal International, De Jong emphasised that his priority is the team’s success on the pitch, rather than his personal life in Barcelona.

“People think I want to stay at Barça forever because life outside football is so good here, and it is good, but it’s less important to what happens on the pitch,” De Jong said.

“If I’d feel that I can’t contribute enough, or the team can’t compete, I’d be gone.”

There is reported interest from the Premier League and his status as the club’s highest earner could force Barcelona to sell if a suitable offer arrives.
