With the 2026 FIFA World Cup final just days away, UNICEF has reflected on one of football’s most remarkable full-circle stories involving Lionel Messi and Spain’s teenage sensation, Lamine Yamal.
In a post shared on X, UNICEF confirmed that the now-viral photographs of Messi holding baby Yamal are genuine, revealing they were taken more than 18 years ago during a UNICEF fundraising photoshoot attended by Yamal and his mother, Sheila.
“Yes, those photos you’ve seen are real,” UNICEF wrote. “More than 18 years ago, a baby named Lamine Yamal and his mom Sheila met Lionel Messi at a UNICEF fundraising photoshoot.”
The timing of the post has added even more significance to the story, with Messi set to lead Argentina against Yamal’s Spain in Sunday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup final, a clash between one of football’s greatest icons and the teenager widely regarded as his heir.
UNICEF also highlighted that while both stars continue to inspire millions on the pitch, they share another important bond away from football.
“Today, their achievements on the pitch inspire millions. Off the pitch, both Messi and Lamine Yamal use their voices and platforms as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors to support and advocate for children around the world,” the organisation said.
Reaffirming its mission, UNICEF added: “The goal? That every child survives, thrives, and fulfils their potential. We are proud to have them on our team.”
As the football world counts down to the World Cup final, the resurfaced images have become a symbol of the sport’s changing generations, with a baby once cradled by Messi now preparing to face the Argentine legend on the biggest stage in world football.
