Ikorodu City Unstoppable: 6 Lessons from NPFL Matchday 15

Matthew by Matthew

Matchday 15 of the Nigeria Premier Football League witnessed a lot interesting results as team fight for top spots while others make efforts to get out of the relegation zone.

There were quite a number of goals scored on matchday 15 and expectedly, most of the home teams secured victories.

This post takes a look at some of the major talking points after matchweek 15.

1. No away wins for teams on the road

No team won away from home this weekend in the Nigeria Premier Football League. All the home teams won at home except El Kanemi Warriors who played a goalless draw against Bayelsa United.

The NPFL in recent times have seen teams record wins on the road and arguably the biggest away win so far is Kano Pillars’ 4-3 win over defending champions Enugu Rangers.

2. Remo Stars terrible away from home

Remo Stars are one of the favorites to win the Nigeria Premier League title this season having come close tondoing it twice.

If you have followed the league for a while, you would realise that taking points or wins away from home is crucial to any team’s title ambitions.

Unfortunately, the Sky Blue Stars have been terrible so far away from home. Daniel Ogunmodede’s side can’t win to save their lives.

Imagine losing to Niger Tornadoes? That’s not good enough for a team that want to win the league.

Remo Stars have lost 5 of their 6 away matches so far in the league this season.

3. Ikorodu City are Unstoppable

The Oga Boys are arguably the most in form side in the league at the moment. The debutants are not just winning but doing so in style.

Ikorodu City continued their unbeaten run with a convincing 4-1 win over Akwa United at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Sunday.

The debutants have only lost a game in 8 matches since Nurudeen Aweroro took over from former coach Bright Ozebagbe.

Ikorodu City are now third on the log with 24 points and are five points behind league leaders Rivers United.

4. Rivers United back in pole position

Rivers United are back on the summit of the league. Finidi George’s side secured 1-0 home win over Ahmed Musa’s Kano Pillars on Sunday to lead the log with three points over Remo Stars.

5. Enyimba lagging behind

The Aba Elephants were not in action this weekend due to continental engagements. Enyimba lost 2-0 to Al Masry in the opening fixture of theor CAF Confederation Cup campaign.

The nine-time champions have three outstanding NPFL games to play as they look to climb up the table.

6. Stability at Heartland

Emmanuel Amunike appears to have steadied the ship. The former Super Eagles winger have gradually made Heartland go on a decent run of form with 4 wins, 2 draws and a loss in 7 matches.

Heartland are now 10th on the log with 20 points after 15 matches after a poor start to the season where they picked just 4 points in their opening five games.
