Italy’s football federation (FIGC) has formally withdrawn its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s bid for re-election, in a move that further strengthens UEFA’s opposition to some of the FIFA leadership’s recent governance decisions.
The FIGC said its decision reflects concerns over initiatives promoted by Infantino regarding the governance and development of international competitions.
The backlash follows reports of a plan to sell a 20% stake in a FIFA commercial rights subsidiary, valued at around $20 billion, to private investors led by Joshua Kushner’s investment fund.
FIGC president Giovanni Malagò said the federation would continue working closely with UEFA and other European federations to promote a model of football based on sporting merit, solidarity, sustainability and the interests of supporters.
The Italian federation’s decision brings it firmly in line with UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin, who has also raised concerns over FIFA’s recent direction.
Italy joins England, Wales, Ireland, Serbia and several Nordic nations, which have either withdrawn their support or expressed a loss of confidence in Infantino’s leadership ahead of the deadline for nominations.
The growing opposition could create significant challenges for Infantino as he seeks another term as FIFA president.
