Early Life and Domestic Beginnings
Born on September 14, 1990, in Ilorin, Nigeria, Juwon Oshaniwa began his professional career with Kwara United in 2007. His early performances quickly caught the eye of top domestic clubs, prompting a move to Lobi Stars in 2008.
He later joined Sharks FC in 2009, where his defensive discipline and consistency helped the Port Harcourt club to the 2011 WAFU Club Championship title — a milestone that established him as one of the most promising full-backs in the Nigerian Professional Football League.
European Adventure: Ashdod and Hearts
In 2012, Oshaniwa made the leap to Europe, signing a four-year contract with F.C. Ashdod in the Israeli Premier League. He became a regular starter during his time in Israel, featuring in key fixtures and scoring his first professional goal in a 2–1 win over Hapoel Petah Tikva in January 2015.
His solid performances attracted attention from clubs in Europe, and in the summer of 2015, Heart of Midlothian completed his transfer. Oshaniwa made an immediate impact in Scotland, debuting in a 2–1 victory over Dundee and finishing his first season with 24 league appearances in the Scottish Premiership.
However, his second season at Hearts was less successful, as injuries and competition limited his game time. In 2017, his contract was mutually terminated, ending his two-year stay in Edinburgh.
Return to Nigeria and Later Career
After leaving Scotland, Oshaniwa returned home to continue his career in the Nigeria Professional Football League, joining Akwa United. His experience abroad made him an influential figure in the dressing room, guiding younger players and helping to stabilize the club’s backline.
In recent years, Oshaniwa has remained a free agent, but his international pedigree and wealth of experience continue to make him a respected figure in Nigerian football circles.
International Career with Nigeria
Oshaniwa’s international breakthrough came in 2012 when he earned his first call-up to the Super Eagles. He was later included in Stephen Keshi’s 2013 AFCON-winning squad, playing a vital role in Nigeria’s defensive structure.
He featured in the AFCON final, coming on as a substitute as Nigeria defeated Burkina Faso 1–0 to lift their third continental title. His solid performances earned him a place in Nigeria’s 2014 FIFA World Cup squad in Brazil, where he played all four of the Super Eagles’ matches, helping them reach the Round of 16.
By the end of his international career, Oshaniwa had made 17 appearances for Nigeria, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and consistency on the big stage.
