Former Super Eagles captain, Nwankwo Kanu joined family and friends at the funeral rites of the parents of Chippa United and Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, held in Rivers State this weekend.
The three-day ceremony officially opened on June 5 with a Service of Songs at the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Okwuzi. It concluded with a dignified funeral and interment on Saturday, June 7, at CPS Okwuzi Egbema.
Nwabali, excused from Nigeria’s national squad for personal reasons, returned home to bury his parents. His father, Chief Godspower Nwabali, passed away in November 2024 at age 72, and his mother, Mrs. Grace Nwabali, died on January 1, 2025, aged 63.

Super Eagles icon Kanu, dressed in traditional attire, offered heartfelt condolences on social media:
“In moments like these, we’re reminded of the importance of unity and support. My thoughts are with @nwabali32 and his family. May the souls of his dear parents rest in perfect peace.”
Nwabali had announced the burial dates via Instagram:
“About time to put my dad and mom to rest. Something I never imagined doing so soon … Difficult to believe I will never set my eyes on you again. It’s a different kind of pain I never wish for my enemy.”
