Kobbie Mainoo sends Manchester United into Champions League after a nervy win over Liverpool

Kobbie Mainoo’s strike from the edge of the box thirteen minutes from time gave Manchester United the win over Liverpool as they return to the Champions League after two seasons.

Four days after putting pen to paper on a new long-term contract, the academy graduate scored the goal that secured maximum points for the Red Devils over Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko gave Manchester United a 2-0 lead in a first half that saw the visitors struggle to break down the hosts.

However, two costly errors from Amad Diallo and Senne Lemmens brought Liverpool back into the tie.

Dominik Szobozlai pounced on Amad Diallo’s wayward pass, drove towards goal from midfield before sending the ball past Senne Lemmens.

The Belgian goalkeeper conceded from his own error gifting Coady Gakpo his fourth goal in his fifth appearance against Manchester United.

Liverpool took control of the tie and almost took the lead from a set piece but Lammens reacted quickly to stop the ball from crossing the line.

With thirteen minutes left on the clock, Kobbie Mainoo pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the box and powered a low drive into the bottom corner to give Manchester United a 3-2 win.

The victory guarantees Manchester United’s place in next season’s UEFA Champions League league phase.
