Madrid defeats Celta Vigo to advance to cup quarterfinals

In a thrilling Copa del Rey Round of 16 match at the Santiago Bernabéu, Real Madrid secured a 5-2 victory over Celta Vigo after extra time, advancing to the quarterfinals.

The match began with Real Madrid asserting dominance. Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring in the 37th minute, capitalizing on a quick counter-attack.

Vinícius Júnior doubled the lead just three minutes into the second half, finishing a well-placed cross. Despite these opportunities, Real Madrid failed to extend their lead, with Mbappé missing two close-range chances and Vinícius Júnior’s effort cleared off the line by Celta’s Carl Starfelt.

Celta Vigo mounted a strong comeback in the final stages of regular time. In the 83rd minute, Jonathan Bamba capitalized on a defensive error to pull one back. Six minutes later, Marcos Alonso equalized with a penalty, sending the match into extra time.

The additional 30 minutes saw Real Madrid regain control. Substitute Endrick put them ahead in the 108th minute with a sharp swivel and shot from the edge of the box.

Federico Valverde extended the lead with a powerful long-range strike in the 112th minute. Endrick sealed the victory with a brilliant back-heel flick in the 119th minute, ensuring a 5-2 final scoreline.

Despite a spirited comeback from Celta Vigo, Real Madrid’s resilience and depth proved decisive. The victory propels them into the Copa del Rey quarterfinals, keeping their hopes alive for domestic silverware this season.
