In a thrilling FA Cup third-round encounter at the Emirates Stadium on January 12, 2025, Manchester United edged past Arsenal with a 5-3 victory in a penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw after extra time.

The match saw its first goal in the 52nd minute when Bruno Fernandes capitalized on a swift counter-attack to put United ahead. However, the dynamics shifted dramatically when Diogo Dalot received a second yellow card, reducing United to ten men. Arsenal seized the opportunity to level the score, courtesy of an own goal by Matthijs de Ligt.

Arsenal had a golden chance to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty, but United’s goalkeeper, Altay Bayindir, made a crucial save to deny Martin Ødegaard.

The deadlock persisted through extra time, leading to a penalty shootout. Bayindir emerged as the hero once more, saving Kai Havertz’s spot-kick. Joshua Zirkzee then converted the decisive penalty, sealing United’s progression to the fourth round.

This victory not only keeps Manchester United’s FA Cup defense alive but also showcases their resilience under pressure. The team will learn their next opponent following the fourth-round draw scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
