Mbappé makes history as France defeat Germany to claim Nations League bronze

France defeated Germany 2–0 in Stuttgart today to secure third place in the UEFA Nations League, with Kylian Mbappé delivering a record-breaking performance and Michael Olise scoring late to seal the result.

The breakthrough came just before halftime, when Aurélien Tchouaméni lofted a long ball over Germany’s high line. Mbappé latched onto it with a deft touch, advanced into the box, and curled a precise shot beyond Marc-André ter Stegen to make it 1–0.

It was a historic moment for the French captain, who became the fastest player in Les Bleus’ history to reach 50 international goals, achieving the milestone in just 90 appearances.

The goal further cements Mbappé’s place among the all-time greats of French football, bringing him within striking distance of Olivier Giroud’s national record.

Germany came out strongly in the second half, pressing for an equaliser. Florian Wirtz struck the woodwork, and Deniz Undav had a goal chalked off by VAR after a foul by Niclas Füllkrug in the build-up.

These missed chances proved costly as the match wore on. Despite moments of individual brilliance and spells of sustained pressure, Julian Nagelsmann’s side lacked the cutting edge to break through France’s disciplined backline.

Late in the game, France doubled their lead. Mbappé again played a decisive role, surging forward on the counterattack and threading a precise pass into the path of Michael Olise, who calmly slotted home to make it 2–0. It was a composed finish and a reward for France’s sharp and efficient attacking play.

While Germany will be disappointed with the result, especially after failing to convert early opportunities, the match offered them lessons ahead of their World Cup qualification campaign.

For France, the victory serves as a strong finish to their Nations League journey, which ended just short of the final after a dramatic semi-final defeat to Spain.

Mbappé was deservedly named Man of the Match for his goal, assist, and overall influence. With this performance, he continues to affirm his role as the leader of the new generation of French talent.

As France celebrates the bronze medal and another milestone for their star striker, attention now turns to the final between Spain and Portugal tonight.
