Michael Kojo Essien (born 3 December 1982) is a Ghanaian football coach and former player who is currently an assistant coach at Danish Superliga club Nordsjælland. During his prime, he was regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world.

Michael Essien: Early Life and Family 

Michael Essien, born on December 3, 1982, in Accra, Ghana, grew up in a lively household with a passion for football. Raised by his parents, James and Aba Essien, Michael was one of six siblings.  

His father, a former footballer, inspired his love for the game from a young age. Growing up in Awutu Senya, Essien balanced school and football, often playing on dusty local pitches. His talent shone early, catching the eye of scouts while playing for Liberty Professionals, a Ghanaian club, at just 15 years old.

Michael Essien: Club Career 

Essien’s professional journey began with Liberty Professionals in 1998, where his energy and skill as a midfielder quickly stood out. In 2000, he moved to Europe, signing with French club Bastia at 18.  

He played 66 matches and scored 11 goals, showing his versatility as a box-to-box midfielder. His performances earned him a transfer to Lyon in 2003, where he won two Ligue 1 titles (2003–04, 2004–05) and became a fan favorite for his powerful runs and tackling. 

 

Move to Chelsea 

In August 2005, Chelsea signed Essien for a then-record £24.4 million, making him the most expensive African footballer at the time.

At Chelsea, he became a legend, nicknamed “The Bison” for his strength and relentless work rate. Over nine years (2005–2014), he made 256 appearances, scored 25 goals, and provided 20 assists. 

Essien helped Chelsea win two Premier League titles (2005–06, 2009–10), four FA Cups, a League Cup, a Community Shield, and the UEFA Champions League in 2012.

His standout moment was a stunning volley against Arsenal in 2006, a goal still celebrated by fans.In 2012, Essien joined Real Madrid on loan, playing under José Mourinho, his former Chelsea manager. He made 35 appearances and showed his adaptability in defensive roles.

After returning to Chelsea, he moved to AC Milan in 2014, where he played 13 matches. Later, he had short stints with Panathinaikos in Greece and Persib Bandung in Indonesia before retiring in 2018 after a season with Sabail FK in Azerbaijan. 

International Career 

Essien was a key figure for Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars, earning 59 caps and scoring 9 goals between 2002 and 2014. He debuted at 19 and played in the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups. In 2006, Ghana reached the Round of 16, with Essien’s midfield dominance crucial.

He also competed in four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments (2002, 2006, 2008, 2010), winning a bronze medal in 2008. Injuries limited his international appearances, but his leadership and skill made him a national hero.

 

Post-Football Career 

 After retiring in 2018, Essien transitioned into coaching and punditry. He earned his UEFA coaching licenses and joined FC Nordsjælland in Denmark as an assistant coach in 2020, working with their youth and senior teams. His role focuses on developing young talents, drawing from his vast experience.

Essien also appears as a football analyst on networks like beIN Sports, sharing insights from his illustrious career. In Ghana, he’s involved in charity, supporting youth football academies and community projects to give back to his roots. 

 

Net Worth 

As of 2025, Michael Essien’s net worth is estimated at around $35 million. His wealth comes from lucrative club contracts, especially at Chelsea, endorsement deals with brands like Adidas, and investments in real estate.

Essien owns properties in Ghana and London and has ventured into business, including a gym in Accra. His financial success reflects his hard work and smart planning off the pitch

Michael Essien’s wife is Akosua Puni Essien. She has gained recognition not only as Michael’s wife but also as a businesswoman.

Notably, Akosua purchased the Italian football club Como FC in 2017. She is also involved in philanthropic work and the management of the Michael Essien Foundation.
