The Moroccan FA have reportedly filed a petition with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to suspend Namibian referee Antsino Twanyanyukwa who officiated the final between the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco and the Super Falcons of Nigeria.
Antsino Twanyanyukwa awarded the host a penalty in the 80th minute after the Super Falcons overturned a two-goal deficit.
Nigerian defender Oluwatosin Demehin appeared to have handled the ball in the box which influenced her initial decision.
However, she overturned her decision after the video assistant referee called her to review her decision which shows that Demehin didn’t interfere with the ball upon review.
Infuriated by the decision of the referee not to award Morocco a penalty, the Moroccan FA reportedly lodged a complaint with CAF to take action on the referee and the Salima Mukansanga of Rwanda who was in charge of VAR.
A Moroccan FA official who spoke on the condition of anonymity with British-Nigerian journalist, Osasu Obayiuwana, said the VAR refused to take the sequence which showed it was an obvious penalty.
There are very serious statements from the match producer, who said that the VAR referee refused to take the sequences that clearly show and prove that there was an obvious penalty. We are fully aware that the match will not be replayed, of course, but it is unacceptable to see such behavior from someone responsible for VAR. VAR is there to correct mistakes. It is not there for anything else.
Jennifer Echegini went to score the winner eight minutes later as the Super Falcons claimed their 10th title with a 3-2 win.
