Mikel Obi, speaking on the ObiOne Podcast, stressed that failing to qualify for the tournament would be unacceptable for the football-crazy nation.
“It’s going to be a crime, an absolute crime, if Nigeria doesn’t make it to the World Cup again.”
The former captain placed the fate of qualification squarely on the current squad, stating they have the power to turn things around.
“We love our football too much. Our World Cup fate is in the players’ hands. They have to win these two games, no excuses.”
Super Eagles must qualify for 2026 World Cup
The Super Eagles currently occupy third position in Group C with 11 points from eight games.
Eric Chelle’s side is gearing up for their final two crucial fixtures in the qualifying series. First, they will travel to the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane this Friday to face the Crocodiles of Lesotho.
They will then round up their campaign with a home fixture against the Squirrels of the Benin Republic next Tuesday. Mikel believes the team must capitalize on these matches to earn a berth at the World Cup.
