The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, keeping their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes alive.
Tolu Arokodare’s solitary goal at the start of the second half proved decisive.
Here are 3 crucial takeaways from the game.

Arokodare can fill in for Osimhen

Victor Osimhen went off injured just after the half-hour mark, replaced by Cyril Dessers who has enjoyed a fine season at Rangers.

However, coach Eric Chelle thre on Tolu Arokodare for the start of the second half, and the 24-year-old target man delivered the goods. He now has 2 goals in 3 games for the Super Eagles, and has surely made a case to start against South Africa.

There is still hope

Despite the underwhelming start to their qualifying campaign, Nigeria’s victory over Rwanda has reignited hope for a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Super Eagles now have nine points from seven games, trailing group leaders South Africa by seven points. With four matches remaining, including a crucial away game against South Africa next week, Nigeria’s fate is still in their hands, but there is no room for error.

Alex Iwobi has become undroppable

Alex Iwobi was the standout performer in Nigeria’s midfield, orchestrating the team’s offensive play against a resilient Rwandan side.
The Fulham midfielder created four chances and continues to show the maturity in his game. He will be crucial for Nigeria’s hopes of defeating South Africa.
