Nigeria 2–1 Lesotho: Win sparks relief, debate and renewed hope in World Cup race

Nigeria survived a major scare to edge Lesotho 2–1 today, a result that keeps the Super Eagles in the hunt for a 2026 FIFA World Cup ticket — but the performance has triggered mixed reactions across the country.

The Super Eagles came into the match under intense pressure, knowing anything short of victory would all but end their hopes. Nigeria dominated possession but were made to work hard with the first half ending goalless.

The goals eventually came in the second half through a well-taken penalty kick by skipper, William Troost-Ekong and debutant, Akor Adams much to the relief of the Nigerian fans. Supporters online said the result was “a win we desperately needed, but not one to brag about.”

Many Nigerians welcomed the three points but criticised the team’s finishing, tempo and defensive lapses. Some fans argued that Lesotho should not have caused as many problems as they did. Others focused purely on the outcome, insisting that “only the result matters at this stage.”

There was also hope that the win could spark momentum heading into the final qualifiers, especially with rivals still within reach.

Nigeria stay in contention, but their route to qualification remains tight. They will still need to win their final match against Benin Republic in Uyo and hope other results fall their way.

For now, the mood across the country is a tense mix of hope, impatience and cautious belief — with Nigerians expecting far more than narrow escapes in matches of this magnitude.
