NPFL matchday thriller: Akwa United edge Enyimba, Rivers United triumph, and Ikorodu City stun Kwara United

Matchday action in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) on February 9, 2025, delivered excitement across various venues, with dramatic wins, late goals, and tightly contested encounters.

At the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Niger Tornadoes and Plateau United played to a 1-1 draw. The home side took the lead in the 59th minute through Daniel Papa. Plateau United equalized in the dying stages of the match with a strike Samuel Kalu as it ended in a stalemate.

In Yenagoa, Bayelsa United and Enugu Rangers battled to a goalless draw. Despite numerous attempts from both sides, neither team could break the deadlock.

Akwa United secured a 2-1 victory over Enyimba in Uyo. The home team opened the scoring in the 26th minute when Ogunleye received a pass over the top, controlled it, and shot into the empty net. Enyimba equalized in the 40th minute through Mohammed, who finished in the left corner amidst a scramble in the area. The decisive goal came in the 75th minute through Uche Sabastine to secure the win for Akwa United.

It was three goals and three points for Abia Warriors as they pummeled Sunshine Stars 3-0 in Umuahia. The opener came in the 18th minute courtesy of an own goal by Sunshine midfielder, Chidozie Iwundu.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 36th minute through a Ijoma Antoine before Samuel Ogunjimi rounded up a miserable afternoon for the Akure side with the third goal in the 92nd minute.

At the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers United claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Lobi Stars with the winner coming in the 88th minute of the match with Timothy Zechariah finishing past the goalkeeper.

At the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, Ikorodu City secured a 2-1 victory over Kwara United. Junior Aimufua opened the scoring in the 1st minute, giving the visitors an immediate advantage.

Ikorodu City eequalized quickly in the 7th minute through Toheeb Ajeyigbe, leveling the match at 1-1. The home side took the lead in the 64th minute when Shola Adelani found the back of the net, securing the 2-1 victory for Ikorodu City.
