Who is Ogenyi Onazi?

Ogenyi Onazi is a Nigerian professional footballer best known for his time with Lazio in Italy’s Serie A and his key role in Nigeria’s triumph at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

A combative, energetic midfielder, he represented Nigeria at two FIFA World Cups (2014 and 2018), and has enjoyed a career spanning Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Early Life

Onazi was born in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, on Christmas Day in 1992. He played street football from a young age and honed his skills with local academies, including El Kanemi Warriors and My People FC — the same grassroots setup that also produced Nigerian striker Stephen Makinwa.

His breakthrough came when he was spotted by scouts during youth tournaments, earning him a move to Europe.

  • Lazio (2012–2016): Onazi made his senior debut in 2012 and quickly established himself as a reliable box-to-box midfielder. He won the Coppa Italia in 2013.

  • Trabzonspor (2016–2019): Moved to Turkey, where he became a key figure in midfield and later lifted the Turkish Cup in 2020.

  • Later played for Denizlispor (Turkey), SønderjyskE (Denmark), Žalgiris (Lithuania), Al-Adalah (Saudi Arabia), Casertana (Italy), East Riffa (Bahrain), Kitchee (Hong Kong), Avezzano (Italy), and in 2025 joined Acireale in Serie D, Italy.

  • Nigeria: Won 52 caps, scored once, and was part of the 2013 AFCON-winning squad. Represented the Super Eagles at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
