Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has reportedly played a crucial role in convincing Nigerian-American basketball star Chimezie Metu to join Galatasaray Basketball ahead of the new season.
According to reports from Turkey, the Galatasaray forward personally spoke with Metu, sharing his experiences at the Istanbul club and encouraging his compatriot to make the move despite interest from several EuroLeague sides. Osimhen’s glowing endorsement of both the club and life in Turkey is believed to have been a decisive factor in Metu’s decision.
Metu, who has NBA experience with the San Antonio Spurs, Sacramento Kings, Phoenix Suns and Detroit Pistons, was attracting attention from a number of clubs across Europe before opting for Galatasaray. Reports indicate that Galatasaray official Mecit Mert Çetinkaya facilitated a meeting between the two Nigerian stars, allowing Osimhen to personally explain why he believes the club is the right destination.
The former Napoli striker reportedly praised Galatasaray’s passionate supporters, ambitious sporting project and the quality of life in Istanbul, while expressing his excitement at the prospect of having another Nigerian represent the club.
Metu arrives in Turkey after recovering from the ruptured Achilles tendon injury he suffered in March 2025. The 29-year-old returned impressively with Gran Canaria during the second half of the 2025/26 campaign, averaging 14.1 points and 4.5 rebounds in Spain’s Liga ACB to prove his fitness ahead of the move.
Osimhen has become one of Galatasaray’s biggest stars since his arrival, helping the club achieve domestic success while establishing himself as a fan favourite. His influence now appears to be extending beyond football, with the striker playing an active role in helping Galatasaray strengthen its basketball roster.
Should the move be completed as expected, Metu will become the latest Nigerian athlete to represent the Turkish giants, joining a growing Nigerian presence at one of Europe’s most successful multi-sport clubs.
