Patrick Vieira has been appointed the new head coach of Senegal’s national team, the Teranga Lions.
The former France international replaces Pape Thiaw, who departed his position following Senegal’s early exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Vieira’s appointment was unanimously approved by the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) on Monday as part of efforts to strengthen the technical management of the national team and help the country achieve its sporting ambitions.
The FSF said discussions are ongoing over the administrative and contractual details of Vieira’s appointment. The federation will announce the date of his official presentation and other details concerning his new role in due course.
Vieira, 50, was a key member of the France team that won the 1998 FIFA World Cup on home soil. He later moved into management, taking charge of clubs including Nice, Crystal Palace and Strasbourg.
His appointment starts a new era for Senegal as the Teranga Lions look to rebuild and return to the top level of African football.
