Premier League Sunday Roundup: Arsenal Leave It Late, Villa Cruise Past Fulham

Arsenal produced late drama at St James’ Park to edge Newcastle 2-1 and close the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool.

The Gunners trailed to Nick Woltemade’s first-half header, but equalised through Mikel Merino before snatching victory in the 97th minute when Gabriel Magalhães powered in Martin Ødegaard’s corner.

The result inflicted only Newcastle’s second league defeat of the campaign and lifted Arsenal within two points of top spot.

Earlier in the day, Aston Villa strengthened their push for European football with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Fulham at Villa Park. Ollie Watkins continued his fine scoring form with the opener before John McGinn and Leon Bailey added goals to put Unai Emery’s side in control. Raúl Jiménez pulled one back for the visitors, but Fulham rarely threatened to stage a comeback.

The results underline contrasting ambitions as the season develops: Arsenal firmly in the title race after back-to-back wins, while Villa continue to impress under Emery, consolidating their place in the hunt for the Champions League spots.
