Nigeria’s influence on the global basketball stage continues to grow, and the 2026 NBA Draft has provided another powerful reminder of the country’s expanding talent pipeline.
From players born in Nigeria to those proudly representing their Nigerian heritage abroad, six prospects heard their names called during this year’s draft, making it one of the strongest Nigerian representations in a single NBA Draft. Their selections further highlight the success of the pathways connecting grassroots basketball in Nigeria, American high schools, college basketball, and the NBA.
Here are six Nigerian stars set to begin the next chapter of their careers.
1. Ebuka Okorie (Detroit Pistons)
Ebuka Okorie emerged as one of the biggest Nigerian stories of the draft after the Detroit Pistons traded up from No. 21 to No. 17 to secure the Stanford guard.
The explosive freshman enjoyed a remarkable college season, establishing himself as one of the nation’s premier scorers. Detroit’s willingness to move up the draft board underlines just how highly the franchise rates his long-term potential.
2. Felix Okpara (Washington Wizards)
Nigerian-born center Felix Okpara earned his NBA opportunity after being selected by the Washington Wizards in the second round.
Known more for his defense than his scoring, Okpara has built a reputation as an elite rim protector, shot blocker and rebounder. His size, athleticism and defensive instincts could make him a valuable asset as he develops at the professional level.
3. Ugonna Onyenso (Detroit Pistons)
The Pistons doubled down on Nigerian talent by also selecting Ugonna Onyenso.
Standing among the tallest prospects in the class, Onyenso is another defensive-minded center whose ability to protect the paint and alter shots gives him significant upside. Detroit clearly sees long-term value in adding two promising Nigerian big men to its system.
4. Tobi Lawal (Dallas Mavericks)
Versatile forward Tobi Lawal earned his place in the NBA after being picked by the Dallas Mavericks.
Lawal’s athleticism, energy and ability to defend multiple positions have made him an intriguing prospect. His relentless motor and willingness to do the dirty work could help him carve out an important role at the next level.
5. Otega Oweh (Oklahoma City Thunder)
After an impressive campaign at Kentucky, Otega Oweh will begin his NBA journey with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The powerful guard is known for his physical drives to the basket, defensive intensity and improving offensive game. His toughness and competitiveness fit perfectly with Oklahoma City’s young and energetic core.
6. Zuby Ejiofor (Atlanta Hawks)
Completing the Nigerian contingent is St. John’s forward Zuby Ejiofor, who joins the Atlanta Hawks.
Ejiofor developed into one of the most dependable interior players in college basketball, combining strength, rebounding and efficient finishing around the rim. His consistent growth throughout his collegiate career earned him a well-deserved opportunity in the NBA.
