Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea has raised questions after the expensive summer outlay.
Moises Caicedo’s thunderous long-range effort gave Chelsea an early lead before Cody Gakpo equalised after the break. But in stoppage time, Estevao Willian struck the winner, condemning Arne Slot’s men to another late setback following defeats to Crystal Palace and Galatasaray earlier in the week.

It is the first time Liverpool have lost three games in a row since 2023 under Jurgen Klopp, and a first such run in Slot’s managerial career. Despite spending over £400 million this summer on the likes of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, the Reds have looked disjointed, also dealing with the tragic death of Diogo Jota.

“You are never close to your ideal. You have to work very hard to reach a certain level, and then it’s hard to maintain that level because you play against other quality teams,” Slot said.
“We had our changes in the summer. Players came in at different moments… We need to bring these players into our style, and we are still a work in progress.”
Reflecting on the game, Slot added: “Another disappointing loss, that is clear… Either team could have won it, and Chelsea did.”
