Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi could be punished by the English FA for the inscription on his undershirt after his goal against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon.
Taiwo Awoniyi scored the third goal as Nottingham Forest thrashed Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 to compound the woes of Igor Tudor’s men.
In an expression of worship and gratitude to God, Awoniyi took off his jersey and knelt beside the corner flag raising his hands to the sky.
Awoniyi had “God is the Greatest” written on his undershirt while he celebrated his second Premier League goal of the season with his teammates including Ola Aina.
While the inscription on Awoniyi’s shirt represents his unwavering belief in God and Christian belief, the striker could be punished by the FA for violating rules regarding slogans, images, and statements with undertones.
According to the rules, players are prohibited from displaying certain messages:
”Equipment must not have any political, religious, or personal slogans, statements, or images. Players must not reveal undergarments that show political, religious, or personal slogans, statements, or images, or advertising other than the manufacturer’s logo. For any offence, the player and/or the team will be sanctioned by the competition organiser, national football association, or by FIFA.”
Taiwo Awoniyi has not hidden his Christian faith through his career as he has always showcased it through writings on his undershirts.
It is not clear whether Awoniyi will suffer a heavy fine given that the statement on his undershirt is not controversial neither does it have a political undertone.
