Victor Osimhen: 3 reasons why European clubs have snubbed Super Eagles star

Victor Osimhen’s 2024-25 season at Galatasaray was electric, with 37 goals in 41 appearances on loan from Napoli.
At 26, the Nigerian striker, a former Serie A top scorer and key to Napoli’s 2022-23 title, seems like a dream signing for Europe’s elite. Yet, only Al-Hilal from Saudi Arabia have made a firm offer, dangling a deal to make him one of the world’s highest-paid players.
So, why are clubs like Real Madrid, PSG, or Premier League giants holding back? Here are three reasons behind their reluctance.

Financial Barriers: High Costs and Wages

Osimhen’s €75 million release clause, combined with his €12 million net annual salary, is a major hurdle. Reports from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano suggest that no Premier League club wants to match these wages alongside the transfer fee and agent costs.
Even if the clause drops soon, the total package—potentially over €100 million—scares off clubs like Manchester United or Arsenal, who prioritize financial discipline.

Tactical issues

Osimhen’s physical, goal-focused style suits teams built around a classic No. 9, but many top clubs prefer versatile forwards who excel in pressing or build-up play. There have been reports highlighting Chelsea’s doubts about his fit under Enzo Maresca’s system.
While the Nigerian is undoubtedly lethal in the box and dominant aerially, Osimhen’s limited link-up play doesn’t align with the fluid, possession-heavy setups of teams like Manchester City, Liverpool, or even Barcelona.

Concerns Over Character and Injuries

Osimhen’s off-field reputation and injury history raise caution. In April 2025, The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported some Premier League clubs questioned his “character” and adaptability, though specifics remain unclear. His injury record, including a 2020 hamstring issue and recurring knocks, also worries clubs, despite his 41-game season at Galatasaray. This perception of risk makes teams hesitant to invest heavily.
Osimhen’s Premier League dream remains strong, but with Europe’s top clubs seemingly staying away, his best bet might be a return to Galatasaray.
