The Nigeria U-17 women’s national football team, the Flamingos, defeated Burkina Faso 2-0 on Monday, September 21, 2026, in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire. The final Group B fixture solidified Nigeria’s position at the top of Group B as the group stage concluded.
The first half of the match saw both teams struggled to find the breakthrough. The Burkinabè defensive setup successfully restricted Nigeria’s offensive line, closing down spaces and neutralising early goal-scoring opportunities. Nigeria controlled the majority of ball possession but was unable to convert it into clear chances before the halftime whistle.
Burkina-Faso kept their shape defensively as Coach Akeem Busari’s side continued to mount pressure, adjusting their offensive strategy against a disciplined Burkina Faso backline. Despite several substitutions and tactical changes, the match remained scoreless past the 80th minute.
Nigeria’s forward Mary Dunstan took advantage of a defensive opening to score the opening goal, putting the Flamingos ahead 1-0 in the 82nd minute. The goal forced Burkina Faso to alter their defensive posture and press forward in search of an equaliser.
Nigeria capitalized on the spaces left by the advancing Burkinabè squad and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi executed a counter-attack and scored the second goal of the match to seal the win added time.
Flamingos finished the group phase with a perfect record of 9 points from three matches, having previously defeated the Niger Republic 5-0 and Ghana 4-2. Nigeria scored a total of 11 goals while conceding only two throughout the opening round.
The victory confirms that Nigeria will play Benin Republic in the semi-final stage of the tournament. The knockout rounds will determine the finalists before the regional competition officially concludes on September 28, 2026.
