3 things to know Flying Eagles rising star, Auwal Ibrahim

Auwal Ibrahim is quickly becoming a household name among fans of Nigerian football.

The 19-year-old midfielder stole the spotlight in Nigeria’s 1-0 victory over Tunisia in their opening match at the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), delivering a performance that confirmed his growing influence in the national setup.

As Nigeria eyes continental glory, here are three key things to know about the Flying Eagles’ latest breakout star:

1. A product of local talent development

Born on January 26, 2006, in Zaria, Kaduna State, Ibrahim represents the strength of Nigeria’s grassroots football system.

Currently playing for Akwa United in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), he has developed a reputation for his work rate, vision, and ball distribution. Scouts across Africa are reportedly watching his progress closely.

2. Hero of the Hour

Ibrahim was the match-winner against Tunisia, coolly converting a well-worked team move in the 38th minute.

His composure and technical skill in front of goal earned him the Man of the Match award—his first at a major international tournament.

The goal secured Nigeria a crucial three points and boosted morale heading into their next group fixture.

3. From Fringe Player to First-Team Regular

Just a year ago, Ibrahim was on the fringes of the national U-20 team, having not featured at all in the WAFU B U-20 qualifiers.

But his persistence, coupled with impressive performances for his club, Akwa United, saw him earn a call-up to the main squad. Today, he’s a fixture in the midfield, trusted by coach Aliyu Zubairu to dictate play and link defense with attack.
