Fulham and Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has made a surprising admission about Nigeria’s newly reintroduced national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”
In a recent episode of the “Is This Seat Taken?” podcast, hosted by Nollywood actress Chinasa Anukam, Iwobi revealed that he hasn’t taken the time to learn the new anthem.
When asked by the host, “Have you learnt the new national anthem?” Iwobi replied with a laugh, “No. When it comes on, I literally stand there and close my eyes.” He even joked about placing his hand on his chest during the recitation, trying to blend in.
The reintroduced anthem, written by Lillian Jean Williams and composed by Frances Berda, has sparked debate among Nigerians. Originally adopted in 1959, it was replaced by “Arise, O Compatriots” in 1978 but made a comeback in May 2024 after President Bola Tinubu’s endorsement.
Prominent figures like activist Aisha Yesufu have vowed not to revert to the old anthem, despite the presidential endorsement.
It seems Iwobi, for now, will be standing quietly, eyes closed, during the national anthem recitation.
