The Super Eagles of Nigeria will face Portugal in a high-profile international friendly on Wednesday night in Leiria.
While it may be friendly on paper, the encounter carries plenty of significance for both nations. Portugal are preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while Nigeria continue their rebuilding process under Eric Chelle following their failure to qualify for the tournament.
Ahead of the clash, here are three important things you need to know.
1. Nigeria Are Unbeaten Since AFCON 2025
The Super Eagles head into the match in impressive form.
Since the conclusion of AFCON 2025, Nigeria have not suffered a defeat. Eric Chelle’s side have recorded victories against Iran, Zimbabwe, and Jamaica, while earning draws against Jordan and Poland.
Their most recent outing ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw against Poland in Warsaw. Nigeria twice took the lead through Terem Moffi and Paul Onuachu before conceding a stoppage-time equaliser.
Across their last five matches, the Super Eagles have scored 11 goals, conceded five, and kept two clean sheets.
The unbeaten run will be tested against one of Europe’s strongest teams.
2. Portugal Are Ranked Fifth in the World
Nigeria may be ranked 26th in the latest FIFA rankings, but Portugal represent a different level of opposition.
Roberto Martínez’s side currently sit fifth in the world and are among the favourites heading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Portuguese squad is packed with elite talent, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Diogo Costa.
Their recent form has also been impressive. Portugal have won three of their last five matches, including victories over Chile and the United States.
Playing at home in Leiria, they will be determined to build momentum ahead of the World Cup.
3. Nigeria Will Be Seeking Revenge
The two countries have met only once at senior level.
That meeting came in November 2022 when Portugal defeated Nigeria 4-0 in Lisbon. Bruno Fernandes scored twice, while Gonçalo Ramos and João Mário also found the net in a one-sided contest.
For many Nigerian supporters, it remains one of the Super Eagles’ most disappointing performances against European opposition in recent years.
This latest meeting offers an opportunity for redemption.
The task will not be easy, especially with key stars Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman unavailable. However, players such as Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, Calvin Bassey, and Terem Moffi will be eager to help Nigeria produce a stronger showing this time around.
