The Super Eagles of Nigeria will face Portugal in a high-profile international friendly on Wednesday night in Leiria.
While it may be friendly on paper, the encounter carries plenty of significance for both nations. Portugal are preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while Nigeria continue their rebuilding process under Eric Chelle following their failure to qualify for the tournament.

2. Portugal Are Ranked Fifth in the World
Nigeria may be ranked 26th in the latest FIFA rankings, but Portugal represent a different level of opposition.
Roberto Martínez’s side currently sit fifth in the world and are among the favourites heading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Portuguese squad is packed with elite talent, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Diogo Costa.

The two countries have met only once at senior level.
