Atlético Madrid and Arsenal played out a tense 1–1 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final at the Metropolitano Stadium.
Arsenal struck first in the opening half after winning a penalty, which Gyokeres calmly converted to take control of the tie. They looked sharper in possession for long stretches, moving the ball with patience and trying to stretch Atlético’s compact defensive shape. Atlético, however, stayed disciplined, refusing to lose shape even when under sustained pressure.
The second half saw a stronger response from the home side. Atlético increased their intensity, pushed higher up the pitch, and eventually got their reward after winning a penalty of their own, which Julian Alvarez converted to level the score.
Three Things We Learned from the Match
1. Arsenal can control games but still struggle to finish dominance
Arsenal had periods where they dictated possession and tempo, especially in the first half. However, their control did not translate into multiple clear chances or a decisive second goal.
Against elite opposition, that lack of killer instinct can become costly, especially in knockout football where margins are small.
Arsenal seemed comfortable with the one goal, coming into the second half after a dominating first half, they seemed relaxed, and wanted to see off the win, but gave more room for Atletico to push and finally found the equalizer.
2. Atlético Madrid remain one of the most difficult teams to break down in Europe

Even when Arsenal were on top, Atlético’s defensive structure stayed compact and organized. They did not panic under pressure and only shifted gears when necessary.
Their ability to stay in games and fight back is still a defining trait, particularly in high-stakes Champions League nights.
This means that Atletico Madrid have not lost to an English side in the Champions League at home, and they have played against teams like; Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham, Leicester City etc.
3. The tie is perfectly balanced, but momentum slightly shifted to Atlético
Arsenal will feel they could have taken more from their dominance phases, while Atlético will feel stronger after responding and finishing the game on the front foot.
Going into the second leg, momentum is not fixed on either side, but Atlético may feel psychologically boosted by finishing stronger at home.
