In the Champions League quarter finals; Bayern Munich delivered one of the most lively nights of this season, knocking out Real Madrid in a seven-goal thriller at the Allianz Arena.
The German side exposed Madrid repeatedly in transition, turning what could have been a comeback for Real Madrid into a failure.
In London, Arsenal did not entertain, but they did what mattered, seeing out a goalless draw against Sporting CP to secure their place in the semi-finals.
Here are three things we learnt from the Champions League night.
1. Bayern forced Madrid into a game they could not control
Bayern Munich removed every layer of control from the tie. Real Madrd was outplayed in their own tatics
Madrid’s strength in recent Champions League runs has been their ability to survive difficult phases and then decide games in short bursts. Like the UEFA Champions League 2022 semi-final, where they stayed alive before striking late and eventually qualifying.
This time, there was no pause in the chaos. Bayern attacked early in transitions, committed numbers forward, and most importantly, kept doing it. Every time Madrid tried to settle, Bayern went again.
The key detail was the space between Madrid’s midfield and defence. It kept opening up, especially when their full-backs pushed high. Bayern recognised it quickly and targeted it with direct runs and early passes into space.
At this level, once a game becomes stretched, it favours the team that embraces the chaos. Bayern did that over both legs. Madrid never regained control of the rhythm, and that is where the tie was lost.
2. Real Madrid’s Champions League edge disappears without structure
There is always a moment in a Madrid knockout tie where the game shifts emotionally. The crowd rises, the opponent hesitates, and suddenly Madrid takes over.
That moment never came. Even when they scored, Real Madrid never sustained pressure or pinned Bayern back for long periods. There was no sequence where Bayern looked overwhelmed or forced into survival mode.
This is where the difference lies. Madrid’s European success is built on defensive organisation during difficult phases. When that structure is missing, the aura alone is not enough.
Across the two legs, conceding six goals tells a clear story. The distances were too large, the recovery runs were inconsistent, and Bayern repeatedly found space too easily.
3. Arsenal showed they can manage a tie, not just play in one
Arsenal’s goalless draw will not attract attention, but it may be one of their most important European performances in recent years.
For a long time, Arsenal have approached European games with the same mindset they use in the league, front-foot football, high risk, and emotional tempo. That approach has often cost them in knockout situations.
This time, they were different. They protected their first-leg advantage without forcing the game. Their structure remained intact, their full-backs were more measured in their positioning, and their midfield stayed connected to prevent transitions.
Sporting had spells of possession, but very few clear openings. Arsenal controlled the important zones, especially central areas in front of the defence, and forced the game into less dangerous spaces.
There is a clear contrast with their elimination by Villarreal CF in the UEFA Europa League. On that occasion, they chased the game emotionally. Here, they managed it intelligently.
In knockout football, knowing when not to attack is just as important as knowing when to push forward. Arsenal got that balance right.
