The NBA landscape has been dramatically reshaped after the Milwaukee Bucks agreed to trade franchise icon Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat in one of the biggest deals in recent league history.
The blockbuster trade, first reported by ESPN insider Shams Charania, will see Antetokounmpo and veteran forward Bobby Portis head to Miami, while the Bucks receive a package centered around All-Star guard Tyler Herro, promising young talents Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakucionis, along with significant draft compensation.
Under the agreement, Milwaukee will also receive the No. 13 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 first-round pick swap, and a 2033 second-round selection. The trade is expected to become official after the NBA’s moratorium period on July 6.
The move brings an end to a historic era in Milwaukee. Drafted by the Bucks in 2013, Antetokounmpo transformed the franchise into a championship contender, winning two NBA MVP awards and leading the team to the 2021 NBA title. Widely regarded as one of the most dominant players of his generation, the Greek superstar leaves Milwaukee as one of the most accomplished players in franchise history.
For Miami, the acquisition represents another major star addition under team president Pat Riley. Antetokounmpo is expected to form a formidable partnership with All-Star center Bam Adebayo, instantly elevating the Heat into the conversation among the Eastern Conference’s elite teams heading into the 2026-27 season.
While the Heat secure one of basketball’s biggest superstars, the deal comes at the cost of several key young assets and future draft flexibility. Nevertheless, Miami believes the opportunity to acquire a player of Antetokounmpo’s caliber is worth the gamble as the franchise pursues another championship.
Meanwhile, the Bucks have opted for a long-term retooling strategy. Herro provides immediate scoring and playmaking, while Ware, Jaquez Jr., and Jakucionis offer significant developmental upside. Combined with the substantial draft haul, Milwaukee has secured valuable assets to help shape the franchise’s future.
News of the trade sparked an immediate reaction across the basketball world, with fans expressing both sadness at the end of Antetokounmpo’s 13-year tenure in Milwaukee and excitement about the formation of a new contender in Miami. The deal is expected to have major implications for the Eastern Conference hierarchy and could trigger additional moves around the league as the NBA Draft and free agency period approach.
