Enugu Rangers beat MC Alger 2-0 in the first leg of their CAF Champions League final preliminary round tie on Sunday, while El-Kanemi Warriors drew 2-2 with Raja Casablanca in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup tie.
Rangers played most of the game at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta with ten men. Goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh saw red early on for fouling Zakaria Naidji, who was through on goal. MC Alger also went down to ten when Oussama Benhaoua picked up a second yellow card shortly after the break.
Rangers broke through late. Kenneth Igboke converted a penalty in the 84th minute after Chimobi Igwilo was fouled.
James Emo then raced clear on a counter-attack three minutes later and finished calmly to make it 2-0. Rangers have a two-goal cushion ahead of the return leg in Algeria on Friday, 23 October.
At the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne, El-Kanemi Warriors took the lead in the sixth minute against the Moroccan heavyweights and three-time CAF Champions League winners, Raja Casablanca through Samuel Ganda.
The vistors levelled in the 23rd minute through Mohammad Abu Zrayq and went ahead just after the hour, when Nigerian forward Mathias Oyewusi scored.
El-Kanemi refused to give up. Nnamdi Mejuobi equalised in the 82nd minute to earn a 2-2 draw in the club’s first meeting with a Moroccan side.
Raja carry two away goals into the second leg in Casablanca on 23 October, so El-Kanemi will need to win or score at least three there to progress.
