Inter Milan’s 2-0 victory over River Plate in the FIFA Club World Cup descended into chaos after the final whistle, following a heated clash between Argentina defender Marcos Acuña and Dutch wing-back Denzel Dumfries.
The tension between the two players, which had been simmering throughout the match, erupted in dramatic fashion in the dying moments of the contest at Seattle’s Lumen Field.
The incident began just after the final whistle was blown. Acuña, who had already shown signs of frustration as River trailed and played most of the second half with nine men, appeared to confront Dumfries aggressively on the touchline.
Eyewitnesses reported that Acuña charged directly at the Inter Milan player, allegedly reacting to an earlier exchange between the two. Dumfries, visibly shocked, attempted to back away, but the confrontation quickly escalated into a physical altercation.
What followed was a chaotic scene involving players, substitutes, and staff from both teams. A scuffle broke out, and tensions flared as personnel from both benches poured onto the pitch in an attempt to either escalate or diffuse the situation.
Inter assistant coach Cristian Chivu was seen stepping in to pull players away and calm the fracas before it could spiral further out of control. Security and match officials also intervened to restore order.
Although no additional cards were issued during the melee, the incident is expected to be reviewed by FIFA’s disciplinary committee. Acuña had already been cautioned earlier in the game, and there is speculation that sanctions could follow for his role in inciting the post-match chaos.
The fiery end to the match overshadowed what was otherwise a composed and professional display by Inter Milan, who secured their place in the round of 16 with the win.
